An old bluegrass tune does well to describe how I got to where I am today; “I've been all around this world.”  My path started in Illinois where I grew up, and I chose to volunteer for the U.S. Marine Corps when it was time to leave the nest.  This began a quest, a long journey of  self- and world-discovery, that continues to this day.  As a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer in East Timor and the co-creator of a nonprofit organization in Peru, I see the world as one, not of separate countries and ethnicities, and I believe very deeply in focusing on the similarities of all people rather than the external differences.  This understanding, in that we are more alike than not, is crucial to realizing true peace in the world.
